How the calculation works
The centre of the screen belongs at your seated eye level — the same principle cinemas use. From your TV's diagonal we derive the panel's real height (a 16:9 screen is 49% of its diagonal tall), place the centre at your eye height, and read off where the bottom and top edges land. For fireplace installs the screen is pushed up by the mantel, so we calculate the upward gaze angle instead and flag anything beyond the comfortable range. Numbers are a starting point — wall studs, skirting, window lines and furniture can all shift the final position a few centimetres. That judgement call is part of what a professional installation gets right the first time.

What height should a TV be mounted at?
For a seated viewing position, the centre of the screen should sit at your seated eye level — typically 95 to 110 cm from the floor on a standard sofa. For a 65-inch TV that puts the bottom edge at roughly 60 to 70 cm. The calculator above gives the exact figures for your TV size and furniture.
Is it OK to mount a TV above a fireplace?
Sometimes. The screen usually ends up well above eye level, so check the upward gaze angle — beyond about 15 degrees causes neck strain over a movie-length sitting. The calculator flags this for your exact mantel height and viewing distance. A tilting or pull-down mount and heat clearance checks make fireplace installs workable in many Brisbane homes.
Does the mounting height change with TV size?
The screen centre stays at eye level regardless of size — what changes is where the bottom and top edges land, because a larger panel extends further in both directions. That is why fixed rules like "bottom edge at 1 metre" go wrong across different sizes.
Where do the bracket holes go relative to these heights?
Standard VESA brackets centre on the middle of the screen, so the bracket plate centre goes at the calculated screen-centre height. Individual brackets vary slightly — always measure your specific bracket's offset from its plate centre to the screen centre before drilling.
