Boosting signal level versus signal quality
A common misunderstanding is that a booster improves the quality of a picture. In reality an amplifier lifts everything present at its input, which means it amplifies noise, reflections and interference just as much as the wanted signal. If the signal reaching the antenna is already weak in quality, adding gain simply produces a louder version of the same problem. It cannot create coverage that is not there in the first place.
For most reception faults, the antenna type, its alignment, the condition of the cabling and correct tuning matter far more than raw gain. A well-matched antenna feeding a clean signal into a short, sound cable run will usually outperform a marginal setup with a powerful amplifier bolted on. Long cable runs and multiple outlets
Where amplification does earn its place is in overcoming genuine distribution losses. Every metre of coaxial cable, every splitter and every wall plate reduces the signal a little, and those losses add up quickly in a large home, across a detached shed or studio, up to a second storey, or when one antenna feeds several television points. In these situations a signal that is perfectly healthy at the roof can arrive too weak at the most distant outlet.
The right approach is to work out where the loss actually occurs and choose the amplifier type, gain and location to suit. A masthead amplifier close to the antenna protects a usable signal before the losses begin, while a distribution amplifier feeds several outlets at controlled, balanced levels. Sizing the amplifier to the measured losses avoids both an under-fed distant television and an over-driven system.

More gain is not always better. Too much amplification, or a strong signal from a nearby transmitter, can overload a television tuner or the distribution equipment itself.
